Theme camp layout
For the past two years the Burning Chicagoans have set up their theme
camp at the 3 O'clock Outpost or Plaza. We hope the organizers of Burning
Man elect to place us there again in 2002 because we have designed the
camp to fit in
the same space and have developed friendships with the other theme camps
there. The Burning Chicagoans and our next door neighbors, PlayaNet /
Fusion Valley, will share resources in 2002. We feel that the Plaza concept
has not reached it's full potential, we are interested in seeing our community
develop it.
Shipping / Transportation
Everything we need for the project will have to be transported from Chicago.
The trailer with the Steam Whistle mounted to it will be towed to Black
Rock City. Other camp materials will be shipped to Reno and trucked on
site during the event.
Safety Plan
The Steam Whistle is a low-pressure water boiler, which is an open system
likened more to a giant teapot rather than a boiler. The system is not
restrictive enough to build up high pressure. An adequate safety release
valve will be installed on the tank. We will keep some 5-pound, ABC type
fire extinguishers in camp and with the Steam Whistle should a fire start
or go out of control. The heat used for the steam is generated safely
in a metal reinforced tray at the base of the trailer. At no point is
open fire on the playa required to execute the project.
Crowd Control Plan
The Steam Whistle sculpture will be surrounded by a drum circle thereby
somewhat limiting the ability of spectators to get too close to the sculpture.
In addition, members of the camp will be on location during each performance
and available to attend to all crowd control matters.

Whistleworks Clean-Up Plan:
As in past years, The Burning Chicagoans are committed to the principles
of LEAVE NO TRACE. Below is the camp clean-up plan of action:
Steam Whistle: We have purchased a burn blanket to put under the Steam
Whistle during its performances. This will eliminate any chances of burn
marks on the playa. Before and after each performance a team from our
theme camp will scour the area to ensure there is no trace of our performance.
We will also have a garbage can at the performance site to help encourage
participants to place their garbage in the correct place.
Camp Clean-Up:
1. Communicating the Plan: Our camp clean-up requirements will
be reviewed and understood by all Whistleworks camp members prior to arriving
at BRC and will be reviewed on-site as needed. Signage will be posted
in key camp communal areas to help remind campers what is needed of them.
2. Upon Arrival: Our scout team that will be first to arrive will
place and mark all trash receptacles (50-gallon plastic trashcans).
3. Reduction: The first step our camp will accomplish is the reduction
of unnecessary trash (i.e. packaging, plastic cups, etc.). Each camp member
is bringing one mess kit that they will wash and reuse throughout the
week (this includes flatware & cups). All food packaging will be reduced
before we reach BRC. We will not bring glass bottles.
4. Waste: Trash will be separated into four groups: recyclable,
organic (for storage in a mesh bag), solid waste and burnable (items in
this group will be few; we understand what can & should not be burned).
The containers will be clearly marked and will be stored in a box van
when full.
5. Materials: The theme camp structure is a solid wood framed building,
pre-fabricated off-site prior to arrival. Minimal construction on-site
will be required, but all necessary construction materials (i.e. bolts,
wood screws, etc.) will be stored and accounted for. We have assigned
a single camp member for this task.
6. Water: Grey water will be evaporated in a tray when possible
and the remaining gray water will be stored in a container. We plan on
hiring the BRC RV servicing crew at least once during the week to ensure
RV grey water is taken care of. Ice water will be reused for showers and
cleaning dishes.
7. Surface and Ground: We will only use rebar for staking down
the structure. The rebar will be clearly marked with brightly color paint
so that we do not miss removing them. All rebar will be marked for safety
also. Each day a team will be assigned to pick-up trash in & around our
camp. This team will be on the lookout for small pieces of trash (i.e.
false eyelashes, can tabs, etc.).
8. Smokers: The few smokers we have in our camp will use small
tins for butts (Altoids canisters altered just for Burning Man).
9. Lost and Found: We will have a designated bin that all items
left out will be placed in. (This should help keep items from floating
away in wind storms.)
10. Hauling: We will have a box van dedicated to hauling camp trash
to the local trash dump. This crew of three people will make as many trips
as necessary to ensure our trash is dumped properly.
Last to Leave Clean Up Crew: We will have a crew of three people that
will leave last to double check the site for any trash and any other needs
to ensure we leave no trace.
